Benefits of Olive Oil in Skincare

Raquel Ruido

Do you love using olive oil when you cook? This cooking staple is not only wonderful for your health and great for flavoring your meals but also excellent for skincare. When you use olive oil in your skincare, you stand to gain many benefits for your most beautiful and nourished skin.

Olive oil is made by pressing out the oil from olive fruit. It features monounsaturated fatty acids that are a treat for your skin. It might not be best to pour your olive oil onto your skin while in your kitchen, but looking for products that contain olive oil as an ingredient have the potential to work their magic.

 Incredible Skin Nutrition

Olive oil features an array of antioxidants. These fight free radicals that damage your skin cells. Along with squalene, it hydrates for a more beautiful complexion. Along with that skin nutrition, the natural composition of olive oil stands to really boost your complexion.

 Stops water loss from skin

Since olive oil is such a good hydrator, it helps reduce the amount of water skin loses. With this moisturisation, it increases the water content in your skin and makes it look healthier than ever.

 Protective from environmental aggressors

Remember those antioxidants? They’re working hard for you with olive oil in skincare. They protect from those damaging effects of the environment as well as inflammation. This means it can help you stop premature aging and reduce irritations.

 Helps remove makeup

Don’t scrub skin and tug at it to remove your makeup. Olive oil breaks down those stubborn waterproof mascaras and eyeliners. As it does so, it also moisturises, conditions, and nourishes. Along with a good cleanse, you’ll get rid of every last trace of the day and allow your skin to refresh while you sleep.

 Soothes and heals wounds

Whether you have a cut, olive oil is wonderful for its anti-inflammatory content. It contains triterpenes, something many plant oils have, that speed up the natural reparation process for healthy skin.

Beneficial Properties of Olive Oil in Soaps

Olive oil is an excellent natural ingredient for soaps. It makes them hard and long-lasting. Since olive oil is high in oleic acid, it both conditions and softens your skin when used for soap-making.

In these soaps, it is blended along with other nourishing oils and butters. Each one brings with it a slightly different property for a well-balanced bar to create a rich and creamy lather. You’ll feel cleansed without that dry feeling other bars of soap tend to bring.

Don’t forget to enjoy olive oil in the foods you eat too. This will provide nourishment from within which also helps your skin. Use it inside and out to have a healthy, youthful, and vibrant appearance, all thanks to nature.

IRISH ENTERPRISE AWARDS 2022

Raquel Ruido

Here at The Moher Soap Co. we pride ourselves on our natural skincare products. Dedicating years to researching and developing many of our natural products, we have worked hard to create a community of loyal customers and to gain recognition.

The natural skincare industry has grown to new heights over the past few years, making competition tougher than ever. It is easy for independent brands to get lost amongst all the attention focused on the big brands. However, over the past few years, The Moher Soap Co. has been making a name for itself with industry recognition coming in the form of awards for the products we have spent many hours creating with our time, attention to detail and hard work.

Best Natural Skincare Products 2020 - WINNER

The first official reward for all our efforts at developing a natural range of skincare products with a low waste ethos came in 2020. That year we were excited to be part of the Prestige Awards and absolutely delighted to take home the award for ‘Best in Natural Skincare Products – 2020’, against a strong field.

Best Soap Company 2021 - WINNER

The following year, we redoubled our efforts and increased our product lines and were rewarded at the Prestige Awards again as we were judged to be, ‘Soap Company of the Year 2021’. This was especially gratifying as, with the Pandemic causing trouble in all our lives, we had really been working hard to bring our A-Game to bear. To be given an award with such scope in 2021 was a big one for us.

Best Artisan Soap Company 2022 - WINNER

It could only go up from here and so it did. We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded ‘Best Artisan Soap Company 2022’ at the Irish Enterprise Awards. Raquel was quoted in response to the award, ‘With an award such as Best Artisan Soap, which is based on such varied criteria, ranging from employee satisfaction to industry recognition, ethical practice and customer feedback, it really is a special honour to be singled out’.

Over the years, we have striven to develop and deliver the best products and the most timely service to our wide range of customers. We will continue to create original, effective products that you will love, with both the planet and your skin in mind. Thank you for supporting us and we look forward to growing with every new and loyal customer.

The Basic Ingredients Of Natural Handmade Soap

Raquel Ruido

“It's a great soap, I have very dry and sensitive skin on my hands from using hand sanitiser, since using the soap it has improved my dry skin, so much so, I bring it to work with me.” - Thank you Susan.

Soap, a substance made by combining fats or oils with alkalies, dissolves in water, forming a lather that is used as a cleanser. Sounds pretty straightforward right? Well, it is, and that’s why we set out to make natural soap.

Today, large brands and marketing companies would have us believe that something as simple as soap must be made with harsh chemicals and fragrances when the truth is, soap by its very definition, is a cleansing agent. If anything, the addition of these chemicals, strips it of its very purpose, to cleanse and soothe your skin.

You can read more about the skin benefits of our natural products on our blog, How We Make Moher Handmade Soap

The Moher Soap Co. was founded because our skin was suffering the consequences of commercial soap. We needed something that would be kind to our skin, not damage it and now we want to share with you the basic ingredients that make that possible.

There are often misconceptions when it comes to natural soap ingredients, they can seem inferior to commercial soap simply because they are not advertised enough. In fact, the opposite couldn’t be more true, natural soap is kinder, more effective and better for your skin health.

Are Natural Soaps Antibacterial?

Two years after the global pandemic first began, we as a country have sought out antibacterial soaps more than ever before. Queue the onslaught of advertisements for antibacterial soap, hallelujah! But, did you know that because of its compound, natural soap is already antibacterial? The oils within the soap, once they become a lather, naturally remove germs and dirt from your hands, washing them away.

There is no data demonstrating that adding an antibacterial agent to over-the-counter soap makes it any more effective than natural soap. There are actually more queries over the long term effects these agents have on our health than there is any indication that they do a better job than natural soap.

Yes, we were surprised too when we first started researching, but there you have it, the natural ingredients in soap already provide more than what you need to wash away bacteria whilst keeping your skin happy.

Our Homemade Irish Soap

When we first began making soap we sourced much of what we needed from our garden and the stunning beaches of County Clare. Ever tried our bath salts or Irish seaweed soap? Well, the seaweed for these is sourced quite literally, down the road from us in Quilty, from a great local business called Wild Irish Seaweed.

Since our little home business began to thrive, we outgrew our garden though friends do still drop round lavender and mint from their gardens from time to time. As we expanded, we began sourcing from Irish suppliers, mainly in Co. Wicklow with the exception of our olive oil that comes directly from a local supplier in Spain.

We ensure that all of our ingredients are ethically sourced, and are certified as such. Ingredients such as our cocoa butter, and other botanicals, are certified organic.

More Reasons To Use Natural Soap

If natural soap being kinder to your skin and the botanical wonders of the world wasn’t enough, our homemade Irish soap is also vegan and cruelty free. It is important to realise that many chemically enhanced soaps require animal testing by law so it is nearly unavoidable when purchasing them. Even if they are not tested on animals here in Ireland, it is law for example, in China, that all products must first be tested on animals. This means that other branches of the same company can carry out the required testing.

At Moher Soaps, we wanted to provide a kinder product for our skin but having been in the business now for sometime, we can confidently say that kindness to us as people goes hand-in-hand with kindness to our environment and its animals.

How We Make Moher Handmade Soap

Raquel Ruido

As one of Ireland’s leading natural homemade soap companies, The Moher Soap Co. started with a simple goal in mind, to make and produce sensitive skin friendly products.

We use the best of natural ingredients to bring you something that the big companies won’t. With cruelty free homemade products, we promise that your skin will be left feeling soft and nourished.

Our soaps, body scrubs, moisturising bars, in fact, all of our natural skincare is made only from ingredients sourced in nature. This means that our natural oils, butters, honey, oats and botanicals are not only kind to your skin but they’re kind to the environment too and smell fabulous!

The Skin Benefits of Natural Soap

We don’t go against the natural order of things so we use methods larger companies may neglect. For example, glycerin is a naturally occurring substance that retains moisture, meaning it draws moisture from the air to your skin.

This guarantees that your skin is left feeling soft and refreshed, and will not cause your skin to dry out should you stop using it. We’ve all had that lip balm at some time or another that makes our lips crack when we stop using it. Not a good look. This is because commercial manufacturers normally remove this natural element, but we keep it intact, so your skin will reap the reward.

Why Our Skincare Is Natural And Cruelty Free

Our products reflect our desires for a more sustainable world, and our process only strengthens this ethos. We originally started the Moher Soap Company as we couldn’t find soaps that would treat our skin with the kindness it deserved. So, we sought ingredients from where our skin thrives the most - outside in our garden and on the sandy beaches of County Clare.

In addition to sourcing the freshest plants and oils we could find, we use a cold process method to ensure that we have total control of what goes into our soaps. Over a period of 4-6 weeks, our soap grows, as if a plant, from a combination of natural ingredients to a kind and sensitive skincare product. Allowing the soap this time ensures that it retains its natural properties, so you and your skin can feel the lasting benefits.
